“New beginnings bring new hope, new chances, new moments to fail and to learn — in all their wondrous glory. Let’s not waste a second.”

As the new year begins, it is for sure a wash of emotions. We are ready for a new start, likely with a few resolutions made (mine — to read more books and connect with friends!), and hopeful for a year with more freedoms, more fun and less fear. And yet, whilst the pandemic still rages, and Omicron numbers skyrocket; it’s hard not to think that 2022 will simply be a re-take of the last two years. We are tired inside and out. The holidays may have been somewhat restorative, but our buckets are still not yet full.

Where do we go from here? How can we move forward with the continued uncertainty, tired bones, and yet also with a big heart, and ready hands that want to be put to good use?

Here are three daily actions to get centered, connected and keep your momentum going. Try all three each day for the month of January, and set yourself up for the year you want to create and enjoy.

Center — Bring In the Gratitude

Starting your day by giving thanks sets a grounded sense of being in place. When you are rooted in gratitude, it will help clear the mind, and allow you to set intentions for the day. Before you get out of bed, or during your first cup of coffee, bring to mind three things you are thankful for this morning. Take a moment to consider each one, and what it means to you. It could be as simple as the breath in your lungs, the four-legged one who got you up at 5am (!), or yes, that big meeting you have later today. Fear and concerns can always be helped by centering yourself around what you already have and what you know. Gratitude brings a richness to life that we already are enough.

Build Momentum — Take One Small Action

Whilst the pandemic might have you feeling stuck and unable to move forward, tiny repeatable actions will create movement and build a strong future pathway. Often we don’t know where we are going or how to start. Or we have a big goal, and it’s hard to see how we will achieve it. The only way has always been — one step at a time. If you can commit to taking one small action every day, you will be surprised how far you can go in the course of one month. Make a promise to do something toward your goal each day, that could look like sending an email, asking for a chat and advice, or writing a few paragraphs. The important part is to do it every day. Two percent improvement every day will lead to considerable growth and impact.

Connect — Reach Out to a Friend

As mentioned, one of my 2022 resolutions is to be more in touch with friends. Over the last few years of COVID-19, I have cocooned myself in a bubble. I text a lot, and kid myself that I am still in touch. There is a big difference though when you actually hear a friend’s voice or see their beautiful face. It makes the heart sit down and take a moment. We are all hungry for connection and love, and I know… there aren’t enough hours in the day. Evidence says, though, that even a quick chat will boost your energy, reduce your blood pressure and might actually help you live longer. Reach out to a friend today. Share your day and what’s going on, and find out all about them, too. You will both be glad you did!

These actions are building blocks, one building on top of another. Pausing to reflect, taking regular action and sharing it all with a friend — it’s like the ebb and flow of the tide, with a dear one by your side. Three simple daily practices will not just start the new year off right, they are good lessons for life too!

Wishing you a wonderful start in 2022. May your new year be filled with much love and happiness, and may opportunities, peace of mind, and good friends abound.
